The Triangle Education Center uses a unique pre-teaching approach to tutoring. As part of this program, tutors help students create a notebook with summarized information including formulas, definitions, theorems, and examples relating to the content taught so that the student may reference it and use it for studying for quizzes and tests. [Read More...].

Triangle Education Center Tutoring Pre-Teaching Program

ANY CHARACTER HERE

Purpose: The goals of pre-teaching are to provide the student with knowledge of the subject matter prior to the lesson presented by the teacher. The benefits of this approach include:

ANY CHARACTER HERE

1. If the concept is difficult for the student, they will not not waste an exposure with the teacher lesson. Example: Teacher teaches lesson, student doesn’t understand and retains nothing from the lesson. Tutor teaches student, student understands lesson. This gives the student 1 exposure to the lesson. In pre-teaching, the tutor presents the lesson to the student. With the 1:1 lesson, the student is able to understand the lesson. The student then is again presented the lesson by the teacher. The student is able to understand the lesson by the teacher because they were already taught the lesson by the tutor. This gives the student 2 exposures to the lesson.

2. Student develops self-confidence and feels good about their ability to do the math because when the teacher presents the information, they already understand the concept and therefore is able to follow the lesson, answer questions during class, and demonstrate success in homework, quizzes, or tests.

3. The lessons can be taught to students at a much quicker pace than teacher-presented lessons. Due to the skill of the tutor and the 1:1 nature of the session, material that may take a week for a teacher to explain to a class full of students can usually be summarized to the main concepts in just a 1 hour session with the tutor.

4. Students are ahead of the game instead of behind. When tutoring happens after a student doesn’t understand the material – it may be a few days or more before the student gets to see the tutor for his or her weekly or bi-weekly session. During this time, a quiz or graded homework assignment may be assigned and the student did poorly on this assignment due to the timing of the tutoring session.

5. Teachers may use material from lesson A to teach lesson B. If the student is lost on the material from session A, they will be lost on material from session B – this makes for an increased chance of getting further behind.
